2. 3D-Printed Skin for Burn Patients
Several hospitals and research centers are running early-stage clinical trials of 3D-printed skin. The printer lays down multiple layers such as:
- Dermis
- Epidermis
- Optional pigmentation layers
If trials continue to be successful, wider hospital use could appear in the late 2020s.
B. Heart Patches
3D-printed cardiac patches are being developed to repair damaged heart tissue after a heart attack. These patches may contain:
- Smooth muscle cells
- Cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells)
- Micro-vessels to support blood flow
A full, transplant-ready 3D-printed heart is still likely at least 10–20 years away.
C. Partial Liver Tissue
Researchers are working on implantable liver tissue that could temporarily support patients with liver failure. The primary goal is to keep patients alive and functioning long enough to receive a donor liver or other treatment.
