3D Printing Classroom Projects: Start Small, Think Big

A 3D printer can turn a classroom question into something students can hold and test. The best first projects are small, useful, and easy to improve. Students learn more when they explain a design choice, try their model, and make a second version.

Project 1: Design a Name Tag

Ask students to create a name tag for a desk, backpack, or classroom display. They can begin with basic shapes, add raised letters, and check whether the text is large enough to read. Tinkercad’s guided 3D design tutorials provide a starting point for learning those tools.

Before printing, have students predict which parts might be too thin or difficult to read. Afterward, they can compare the finished tag with their design and change one feature.

Project 2: Solve a Classroom Problem

Invite students to look around the room for a small problem they could solve: pencils that roll off a table, loose markers, or supplies that need a holder. Each student or team can sketch an idea, build a model, and explain how it would help.

For a more structured lesson, TeachEngineering’s 3D printing and CAD activity takes students through designing, building, and testing a desk organizer. Teachers can adapt the challenge to their class and available time.
